On October 16th, “Yesterday Once More”, an art exhibition celebrating Kei Toume’s manga series “Sing Yesterday for Me”, will enter its second phase at Space Caiman in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
Debuting in 1997, manga series “Sing Yesterday for Me” ended its run earlier this year. The exhibition is timed to coincide with the publication of the 11th and final volume of the series.
The exhibition’s first phase focused on the manga’s “analog” period, featuring 67 color illustrations from the earliest part of the manga’s run, as well as numerous unpublished sketches from the artist. It also took a look at the period that would be included in the manga’s final volume, including artwork from the last two chapters.
In addition to completing the “Sing Yesterday for Me” retrospective, the exhibition’s second phase will also include other projects from throughout Toume’s career. Works planned for exhibition include her “Fuushi Juunika” artwork series from Kodansha magazine Afternoon, as well as her illustrations from Wanimagazine’s Robot periodical. In recent years, Toume has been working primarily with acrylics and watercolors on paper, then digitally editing her artwork; the exhibition will include a side-by-side comparison of some of her original works before computer editing and the finished products.
A wide variety of merchandise will also be available for purchase at the event, such as an oversized postcard and catalog set depicting the artwork displayed at the event’s first phase, a commemorative hand towel, and other exclusive items. One of the more unique items for sale is a bag of Milk Hall coffee, a fictional brand that appears in “Sing Yesterday for Me” as character Haru’s employer.
Visitors can try a capsule toy machine that dispenses metal pins featuring Toume’s artwork, some of which are signed by the artist herself, as well as special pins that can be exchanged for art prints. Wine bar Caiman Table, located on Space Caiman’s first floor, will be serving a themed menu, including a coffee and cheesecake set accompanied by a limited edition sticker. Coffee will also be available for takeout orders.
The event is open Friday through Monday from 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and will run until October 26th. Admission is free.
