An art book released on May 26th, titled “Eshi de Irodoru Sekai no Meiga” (subtitled in English as “Japanese Contemporary Illustration Artists Meet Old Master Paintings”), reimagines famous paintings by van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir, Vermeer, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and other masters as anime-inspired artwork.

A recent trend in Japanese art circles has led to a subculture of artists inspired by fine art techniques. The art book pairs moe-influenced paintings with their original inspirations, and includes detailed explanations of painting techniques and history.

Modern artists participating in the book include “Encouragement of Climb” creator Shiro, video game character designer and animator Kina Kazuharu, and “Medabots” creator and mechanical designer Horumarin. Each artist provides their own take on one of 43 famous paintings.

Original artwork selected for the book includes Johannes Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and “The Milkmaid”, Jean-Francois Millet’s “The Gleaners”, Vincent van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”, Edvard Munch’s “The Scream”, Pablo Picasso’s “Les Demoiselles d’Avignon”, Henri Rousseau’s “The Snake Charmer”, Sandro Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and “Primavera”, John Everett Millais’s “Ophelia”, Paul Gauguin’s “Tahitian Women on the Beach”, Rembrandt van Rijn’s “The Night Watch”, Tawaraya Sotatsu’s “Fujin Raijin-zu”, Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s “Soma no Furu Dairi”, Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s “Divan Japonais”, and Claude Monet’s “Woman with a Parasol”, among others.

The book retails for 2,200 yen, plus tax. Purchases of the book’s initial printing at select bookstores will be accompanied by a limited edition postcard.
