Collaborative research effort “Ghost in the Shell Realize Project” is currently attempting to bring the technology of science fiction anime series Ghost in the Shell to life, including cyborgs, cyberbrains, thermo-optical camouflage, and think tanks.
The project, which brings together some of Japan’s preeminent companies, university researchers, and public institutions, was revealed on November 12th at NTT Docomo Ventures Day, an event for technology start-up companies sponsored by communications corporation NTT Docomo.
Naotaka Fujii, representative director of VR company Hacosco and team leader of the Adaptive Intelligence research team at the Riken Brain Science Institute, explained how false memories can be implanted through a “substitutional reality system”. Using a head-mounted VR display, it would become possible to create a world where users could not distinguish between reality and technological creations.
Masahiko Inami, media design graduate school professor at Keio University, described his research into thermo-optical camouflage, while Docomo Ventures vice president-director Nobuyuki Akimoto, explained how powered suits and robotic arms could be used in sports events, stating that Ghost in the Shell’s vision of the year 2029 was not that far away from current reality. Other highlights included guest sessions that explained how to make cyberbrains a reality, noting that the main obstacle to reproducing Ghost in the Shell’s micromachines to connect to computer networks is the research cost, as well as detailing the current research efforts into this area.
25 years after its creation, fans are still captivated by the world of Ghost in the Shell. The Ghost in the Shell Realize Project truly has the potential to bring together Japan’s brightest minds to make this fictional universe a reality.
