A new anime adaptation of smash hit manga series Berserk will premiere on Japanese TV this July.

Created by Kentaro Miura, action-packed manga series Berserk tells the story of wandering mercenary Guts and his adventures in a world filled with swordplay, magic and demons. The series has sold a total of 40 million volumes worldwide.

The upcoming series is the third Berserk anime adaptation. The first TV series, titled “Kenpu Denki Berserk” in Japanese, originally aired October 7th, 1997 through March 31st, 1998. A movie trilogy, known as “Berserk: The Golden Age”, was later released in Japanese theaters. This month’s TV anime series is a continuation of the film trilogy.

The new series, simply titled “Berserk”, will be directed by “Devil May Cry” director Shin Itagaki. “Neon Genesis Evangelion” composer Shiro Sagisu will handle the series’ score, with insert songs written by Susumu Hirasawa. The series will be produced by Liden Films and animated by Gemba and Millepensee.

The voice cast includes Hiroaki Iwanaga as Guts, Yoko Hikasa as Farnese, and Kazuyuki Okitsu as Serpico. One of the series’ most popular villains, Holy See inquisitor Mozgus, will be voiced by Rikiya Koyama, a casting choice that has many fans excited to see how the character’s fanaticism will be brought to life.

The series will premiere on the night of July 8th. It will air on MBS’s Animeism programming block at 2:40 AM, TBS at 2:25 AM, and CBC at 3:16 AM. It will also air on premium channels BS-TBS and WOWOW, and will be available digitally through the d Anime Store.
