Rock band KISS will be teaming up with legendary manga and anime series Astro Boy for a special exhibition at the upcoming KISS Expo Tokyo 2016, to be held on October 13th through 31st at Laforet Museum Harajuku.

The first Astro Boy cross-promotion of its kind, the exhibition is the result of a collaboration between KISS frontman Gene Simmons, a fan of the anime series, and Rumiko Tezuka, a member of the board of directors of Astro Boy studio Tezuka Productions and a devoted KISS fan.

The exhibition will feature artwork from Tezuka Productions supervisor and illustrator Nampei Kaneko integrating Astro Boy characters into the iconic cover art of KISS albums “Love Gun” and “Destroyer”. A variety of exclusive merchandise will also be available, including women’s and kids’ T-shirts depicting characters from the manga series wearing KISS makeup, as well as transparent file folders and canvas art prints featuring Kaneko’s artwork.

Regarding the collaboration, Gene Simmons states, “Astro Boy brings back fond memories of my childhood. I remember jumping up from the couch and imagining I was Astro Boy – fighting dastardly villains, flying through the skies… the little robot boy who defended all of us from evil.”

According to Rumiko Tezuka, daughter of Astro Boy creator Osamu Tezuka, “In 2001, the day before I went to see KISS on their Farewell Tour, I met Gene Simmons at an autograph event. Being a Japanophile, Gene started talking about an animated show he remembered from when he was a kid, and began humming the Astro Boy theme. You wouldn’t believe how excited I was when I found out Gene loved my father’s Astro Boy! That day was like a dream to me, and I thought that someday I’d like to try to set up a collaboration between KISS and Astro Boy… 15 years later, that dream has come true. Starting today, Astro Boy is a member of the KISS Army.”

KISS Expo Tokyo 2016 is produced in partnership with the band, and features an exhibition of approximately 100 pieces of memorabilia and other items from throughout the band’s 42-year history. Highlights include free KISS makeup face painting, a stage set with some of the band’s instruments, VR tours of Gene Simmons’ and Paul Stanley’s personal homes and workshops, and exclusive KISS merchandise for sale.

The event will be open daily from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM (6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the 13th). Admission is 1,600 yen for adults and 1,000 yen for students. Advance general admission tickets, including a limited edition sticker, will also be available for purchase.
