On August 11th, Bandai’s candy toy division will be releasing a series of 3D holographic Hatsune Miku toys, each retailing for 500 yen.

The toys are the newest addition to Bandai’s “Hako Vision” line of box-shaped toys that utilize smartphones to create holograms. Made in the approximate shape of an 8.5 centimeter cube, each toy contains a backdrop, as well as a 2-dimensional bar code printed on the box. After scanning the bar code, the smartphone is placed face down on the open top of the box and, utilizing the box’s proprietary technology, projects a highly realistic 3D video. For the Hatsune Miku toys, the videos combine singing and dancing to create the illusion of a miniature 3D Miku.

The original videos, created by art director and designer Wakamura P, utilize the newest 3D model of Miku, and are set to four of her songs: “Tell Your World”, “World is Mine”, “Nijigen Dream Fever”, and “Story Rider”, each with two versions. The videos for “Nijigen Dream Fever” and “Story Rider” will feature Miku in an alternate outfit, and the ability to randomize videos every time a 2-dimensional bar code is scanned will also be included in the toys.

In addition, Bandai will be releasing some of the Hako Vision data to content creators free of charge. This will allow users to create and share custom videos to be used with the toys.
