On June 9th through 25th, the official web site of upcoming film “The Irregular at Magic High School the Movie: The Girl Who Calls the Stars” will allow users to participate in group chats with AI versions of main characters Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba, as well as use voice stickers recorded by character voice actors Yuichi Nakamura and Saori Hayami.

The campaign is the first use of the Project Samantha AI technology, a joint venture between Sony Music Entertainment and IMAY (Intelligent Machine Amaze You). Using the K-laei AI engine, Project Samantha provides interactive services with AI personalities based on fictional characters from anime, manga, and novels. A beta test last year allowed users to interact with abusive schoolgirl Motoko from art series “Batou Shoujo”, voiced by Marina Inoue.

The upcoming campaign, also utilizing the K-laei AI engine, will let users talk with Tatsuya and Miyuki Shiba via an interface designed to resemble a group text chat. The AI’s advanced technology allows it to comprehend both written words and the unspoken subtext beneath them. The natural language understanding algorithm currently comprehends around 100,000 expressions, with the current goal to expand it to 120,000.

Sony Music Entertainment plans on continuing to provide AI communication services as part of Project Samantha, with the eventual goal of making every fictional character into an AI personality. The project will encompass not just characters from anime and manga, but also characters played by actors in movies, TV shows, and stage performances, even going so far as to consider regional mascots.

“The Irregular at Magic High School the Movie: The Girl Who Calls the Stars” will open on June 17th.
